One big difference between the way I and a lot of other moms like me were raised (in the 1970s and 80s) and the way we are raising our kids today is the degree to which we were allowed to roam about unsupervised at a relatively young age. For example, I’ve taught them to cook basic things like scrambled eggs on our gas stove and I let them climb up the step ladder to change the light bulbs on top of the bathroom vanity. And we’d do that all day on non-school days (especially in the summer), returning home only for meals.   Shoe-tying in this age of Velcro sneakers is one example, as is getting and/or hanging up coats. Even before 10yo, I’d leave home on my bike or by foot and go hang out in a friend’s yard or in the park, just us with no parents around.  The thesis is parents are babying their kids by limiting their independence, or even blocking it, in what the article describes as the “dependency dilemma. WSJ reports on a study that found U. S. kids tend to be dependent on their parents for tasks they can do themselves.

Moving on to the bathroom, Mori saw the towels neatly hung, but Naoki's shaving kit was gone from the Alert and unsettled, Mori crossed to the closet for a closer look, saw that it was empty of all Naoki's clothing. Before long, Naoki would come home from the grocery, tired from his busy weekend as well, no doubt. The trip to Kyushu had been fruitful, but ultimately exhausting, and after dropping his luggage by the closet, he'd climbed on the bed he shared with Naoki, hoping to stretch the kinks out of his back from hours in a cramped train seat. Mori was back in their house for nearly twenty minutes on Sunday afternoon, before he registered anything amiss. He stared at the ceiling of their bedroom, the vivid lantana bobbing against the window outside, so glad to be home again, soaking up the peaceful comfort....

I don’t even think you have to be ‘good’ at plumbing to do it. If you’re going to keep the sink drains in the same spot on the wall as the ones are now then you’re talking about unscrewing the drains and faucets. If you want to move the sinks to the left or right though it becomes more difficult.
