Lots and lots of pillows. "It meant a lot to our church to be able to help carry on Jake's legacy. The church community helped collect and package more than 7,000 Pillow Pets in January for Super Baskets of Hope, the Super Bowl project sponsored by Riley Children's Foundation and the National Football League. When 262 volunteers gathered last month at Carmel's Northview Church on a Saturday afternoon, there were two things on their minds: helping sick children and pillows. "We had given him a Pillow Pet to help comfort him at the hospital," said Jake's mother, Tosha McConahay. "The fact that we were able to reach out to kids all over the nation and send some hope and encouragement to them was a huge blessing," said Monica Polkow, Northview's local outreach coordinator. He became a fixture at Riley Hospital for Children, where he received daily treatments.

Another friend, given a pillow made with her father's ties, wrote: "It filled me with great joy as my memories of many occasions came to mind as I recalled the ties' lifetimes. When a neighbor died, Mary took his ties and made pillows for his wife and children. When he died in 2003, Mary couldn't bear to part with them — so she made them into pillows. Little did she know then just how many pillows she would make. Mary searched the Senior Center's resale shop and bought all the silk ties to make gifts. She began by turning Peter's ties into tangible memories for family members. Mary Rommell's husband, Peter, loved his silk neckties. I'll always treasure my godfather's ties.

The basket of clean towels that had yet to be folded, the pillows and cushions from the sofa, pieces from his his GI Joe tank, his brothers clone figures from the bay window, his home work, and his books from his school bag, stuffed animals and... The rest of his blankets and stuffed animals, his sheets and matress pad, his library books, his legos, and any other toys he could grab and fling. When I excused him to go to bed he proceeded to do the same in his bedroom. But what was unusual was it wasn't accompnied by the normal yelling, screaming, shouting, and name calling. Last night OLA had a tantrum because he couldn't have a cookie. Now there is nothing unusual about having a tantrum. But every available object was launched all over the living room....

Rhett had sketched this image a thousand times the summer he broke his right leg and had to stay sequestered to the first floor, sleeping in the guest room and hobbling from kitchen, to dining room to back yard. Fabric softener and the remnants of the Fresh Tide cling and trigger a set of memories, handfuls of summers and late springs when the dryer broke down at her parents&rsquo. The towel quickly cooled in the air of the Laundromat and Scout stuffed it, along with the rest of the things into the back. For a second, as Scout starts to pull out the warm clothes from the dryer, she pauses, pressing the fabric to her nose, and inhales long and deep. The image of Ingrid standing with clothes pins in her hands, her blond hair billowing like a flame....
